What Is a Candlestick Pattern?

Candlestick patterns are visual indicators used in technical analysis to predict price movements in financial markets, particularly in stocks, forex, and commodities. These patterns are formed by the open, high, low, and closing prices within a specific timeframe and are represented graphically through candlestick charts.

What Is a Candlestick Pattern?

  1. Hammer and Hanging Man:
    • Hammer: It’s a bullish reversal pattern that occurs at the bottom of a downtrend. It has a small body near the high and a long lower shadow. This pattern suggests a potential trend reversal from bearish to bullish.
    • Hanging Man: This is a bearish reversal pattern that appears at the top of an uptrend. It has a small body near the low and a long upper shadow. It indicates a possible trend reversal from bullish to bearish.
  2. Doji:
    • A Doji occurs when the opening and closing prices are virtually equal, resulting in a small or no real body and long shadows. It represents indecision in the market and could signal a potential reversal or continuation, depending on its context and the preceding price action.
  3. Engulfing Patterns:
    • Bullish Engulfing: This pattern consists of a small bearish candle followed by a larger bullish candle. The bullish candle completely engulfs the previous bearish candle’s range, indicating a potential bullish reversal.
    • Bearish Engulfing: It’s the opposite of the bullish engulfing pattern. Here, a small bullish candle is followed by a larger bearish candle that completely engulfs the previous bullish candle’s range. It suggests a potential bearish reversal.
  4. Morning Star and Evening Star:
    • Morning Star: It’s a bullish reversal pattern formed by three candles. The first is a large bearish candle, followed by a small candle with a gap down, and finally a large bullish candle. It indicates a potential trend reversal from bearish to bullish.
    • Evening Star: This is the bearish counterpart of the morning star. It consists of a large bullish candle, a small candle with a gap up, and finally a large bearish candle. It suggests a possible trend reversal from bullish to bearish.

How to Read a Candlestick Pattern

A daily candlestick represents a market’s opening, high, low, and closing (OHLC) prices. The rectangular real body, or just body, is colored with a dark color (red or black) for a drop in price and a light color (green or white) for a price increase. The lines above and below the body are referred to as wicks or tails, and they represent the day’s maximum high and low. Taken together, the parts of the candlestick can frequently signal changes in a market’s direction or highlight significant potential moves that frequently must be confirmed by the next day’s candle.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Candlestick patterns are technical trading tools that have been used for centuries to predict price direction.
  • There are dozens of different candlestick patterns with intuitive, descriptive names; most also have a corollary pattern between the upside and downside. For instance, an “abandoned baby top” has its corollary in an “abandoned baby bottom;” “tweezer bottoms” have their upside corollary in “tweezer tops.”
  • Traders supplement candlestick patterns with additional technical indicators to refine their trading strategy (e.g., entry, exit).
  • Candlesticks are based on current and past price movements and are not future indicators.

It’s important to note that while candlestick patterns provide insights into potential market movements, they should be used alongside other technical indicators and analysis tools for better confirmation and decision-making in trading or investing. Traders often combine these patterns with other technical analysis methods to make more informed decisions about market entry or exit points.

Why Dr. Manmohan Singh deserves the Nobel Prize in economics.

Why Dr. Manmohan Singh deserves the Nobel Prize in economics.

Manmohan Singh, born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan), is an Indian economist, academic, and politician who served as the 13th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014. His life is a testament to perseverance, dedication, and intellectual prowess.

Why Dr. Manmohan Singh deserves the Nobel Prize in economics

In 1972, Singh was chief economic adviser in the Ministry of Finance, and in 1976 he was secretary in the Finance Ministry. In 1980–1982 he was at the Planning Commission, and in 1982, he was appointed governor of the Reserve Bank of India under then finance minister Pranab Mukherjee and held the post until 1985.

Why Dr. Manmohan Singh deserves the Nobel Prize in economics.

In 1992, a sprightly Sikh gentleman swiftly climbed the steps of the podium at a law conference in the central hall of the Ashok Hotel, New Delhi. For one hour, without a scrap of paper, he lucidly explained the complexities of India’s liberalization process. He painstakingly forewarned the ecstatic audience, that in order to sustain growth and drive up the investments — especially the foreign investors— it was necessary “to create an environment facilitating growth”. The erudite speaker fully in the grip of the subject, was Dr. Manmohan Singh, the then Finance Minister of India, who was swiftly maneuvering India out of its worst financial crisis.

Just the previous year,  in 1991, India headed by Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar  was on the  edge of the precipice of an ignominious  sovereign default. India’s international trade balance was in a hopeless deficit. Its external debt had doubled from $ 35 billion to $ 69 billion in 1991. India was running out of money, and time.  It had less  than $6 billion in foreign exchange reserves – just enough to meet around two weeks of the country’s imports. In May that year, the State Bank of India sold 20 tonnes of gold to the Union Bank of Switzerland to raise around $200 million.

Singh’s journey to becoming a significant figure in Indian politics is marked by his exceptional academic achievements and a distinguished career in economics. He obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Punjab University, later earning a doctorate from the University of Oxford, where he was a member of Nuffield College.

He began his career in academia, serving as a professor of international trade at the Delhi School of Economics and later as the Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India in the late 1970s. His economic expertise led to several significant positions, including the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985 and the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission from 1985 to 1987.

Manmohan Singh’s most notable contribution came as the Finance Minister of India from 1991 to 1996 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narasimha Rao. During this time, he implemented crucial economic reforms that liberalized India’s economy, dismantling the License Raj and opening up the country to globalization. His policies helped India move from a closed, controlled economy to a more market-oriented one, spurring economic growth, foreign investment, and modernization.

After the 1991 elections, the Indian National Congress and the UPA assumed office. The then Prime Minister Narasimha Rao requested I.G. Patel, the just retired Director of the London School of Economics to become India’s finance minister. The latter declined the offer. Instead, he recommended his most outstanding protégé, Dr. Manmohan Singh to pull the country out of the economic morass.

Dr. Manmohan Singh came to India as an uprooted child during the partition. Perhaps, the hardships faced by him gave him the impetus to  stand first throughout his sterling academic career in economics. He got his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 1952 and 1954. He went on to complete his Economics Tripos at the University of Cambridge under the tutelage of two of the foremost and hugely influential Keynesian economists, Joan Robinson and Nicholas Kaldor. Both Robinson and Kaldor  were a fervent advocates of  how governments should combine development with social equity and make  capitalism work in the larger public interest. These two formative influences would dramatically reflect in Dr. Singh’s approach while spearheading the Indian economy into a full throttle growth engine.

Dr. Singh’s eternal quest for higher learning would take him back to the University of Oxford for his DPhil. His 1962 successful doctoral thesis would form the basis for his book “India’s Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth”.

Dr. Singh as Finance Minister (1991-1996), inherited a devastating balance of payments situation and a double digit inflation. He  took two economically sound, but politically volatile decisions. The rupee was devalued twice in July 1991, first by around 9 per cent, followed by another devaluation of 11 per cent. With a devalued rupee, our exports became cheaper, a necessary course correction for our worsening trade imbalance. As an emergency measure to tide over our current account deficit, the Reserve Bank  of India pledged its gold holdings with the Bank of England raising around $400 million to stave off the current account deficit.

What followed was a series of reforms of the Indian economy which he aptly called “reforms with a human face.” The prelude was the dismantling of the License Raj with the introduction of the Industrial Policy, 1991. Deep structural reforms were made with the implementation of tradeable exim scrips, ending the stranglehold of the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Act making it easier to restructure businesses by facilitating mergers and amalgamations, ending the  monopoly of the state owned companies over imports, and automatic approval of foreign direct investment in many sectors. All these reforms required not just the political courage and economic foresight but  the confidence that he could create an economic environment to enable Indian business and industry to thrive in the new international regime of globalised trade.

Singh’s technocratic approach and pivotal role in transforming India’s economy earned him immense respect and recognition. He was appointed as Prime Minister in 2004, leading the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. His tenure witnessed significant economic growth, poverty alleviation programs, and initiatives in infrastructure development and social welfare.

Despite facing challenges during his tenure, Singh’s leadership focused on inclusive growth, rural development, and efforts to reduce social disparities. He played a crucial role in furthering India’s global relations and advocating for economic cooperation on the international stage.

Manmohan Singh’s success story is one of academic brilliance, professionalism, and dedicated service to the nation. His contributions to India’s economic reform and subsequent leadership as Prime Minister have left an indelible mark on the country’s development trajectory and its position in the global economy. His legacy continues to shape economic policies and remains an inspiration for aspiring leaders and policymakers in India and beyond.

Imagine a scenario where you have set out for a morning run and thirsting for a bottle of water, then you realize that you’ve forgot to carry your wallet along with you. But that’s hardly an issue when you’re carrying your phone and Paytm is all set to remind you Paytm karo.

The convenience to carry and do an online payment is the core reason that helped in widespread of applications like paytm.

The short form for “Pay Through Mobile” – Paytm was started in 2010 by Vijay Shekhar Sharma.  Paytm in its early days was an Indian e-commerce website as well as an application that allows users to initiate online payments for various services.

Back in 2017 when Vijay Shekhar Sharma, son of a school teacher was named as the youngest billionaire in India, this become an inspiration for many new entrepreneurs.

But, have you wondered how he succeeded?

How Vijay Shekhar turned the winds in his direction and brought a notable shift in the online payment industry of India? Let’s find out!

Over the last decade, the Indian startup ecosystem has witnessed a burgeoning number of many multinational companies (MNCs) and entrepreneurs, both in terms of their growth and net worth. If you have been an observer of Indian startups over the last half a decade, the success story of Paytm and its successful CEO – Vijay Shekhar Sharma, is not something you would have missed noticing. Paytm is regarded as a pioneer of the e-wallet ecosystem in India, and it still continues to rule the roost despite some stiff competition from other e-wallets that emerged after Paytm.

The success story of Vijay Shekhar Sharma – the Paytm CEO, is closely tied with Paytm’ success story, so much so that he is the second-youngest billionaire in India today with a net worth of 2.35 billion USD, as per the Forbes 2020 list of 100 richest Indians. Let’s get a peek into Vijay Shekhar Sharma’s early life, education, and passionate struggle to realise his dream – Paytm.

Initial Days and Education of Vijay Shekhar Sharma

Vijay Shekhar Sharma came from a humble middle-class family that placed high importance on education. He was born into an underdeveloped community in the peaceful town of Aligarh, which is located in Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India. Additionally, Mr. Sharma’s father was a teacher, which had a significant impact on his ability to be brilliant.

He completed his entire education in the Hindi language, and he confidently and rapidly overcame the obstacle of his lack of fundamental English language abilities to gain entrance to college. Mr. Sharma gained admission to a prominent engineering college in Delhi thanks to his impeccable English skills. The Paytm CEO’s life appears to have taken a dramatic turn. He quickly transitioned from being an intelligent student to one with failing grades. His interest in entrepreneurship also started to grow around this period.

Driven by Stories of Successful Entrepreneurship

While pursuing his engineering degree in the 1990s, Vijay Shekhar Sharma’s interest in entrepreneurship began by learning about the success stories of mega-brands like Apple, HP, Intel that went on to become the biggest names in the startup ecosystem. He realised that the success stories of all these firms emerged from the Silicon Valley in the US – the startup factory of the time. Mr. Sharma dreamt of being part of Silicon Valley, but with a grave dearth of resources, he soon realised that he needed to create one such ecosystem in India.

Journey of Entrepreneurship – Struggles and Opportunities

Along with a few of his college mates, he started to build his own content management company called Xs! Corporation, – a web portal and a search engine that offered internet-based services, including web directories. The company was engaged by some of the reputed newspaper outlets in India like The Indian Express. The company was doing well and managed to generate a turnover of Rs. 50 Lakhs between Feb-May 1999. He later sold off the company for half a million dollars and shared it equally between four of his partners.

This was also the time when he finished college and bagged his first job with an MNC, only to quit after six months. He decided to take the road less travelled.

Vijaya Shekhar Sharma‘s success story is one of tenacity, fortitude, adversity, and clever work, all of which have also paved the road for Paytm’s success story. Paytm is a platform for payments, lending, and other financial services. In addition, it supports the sale of everything from air purifiers to train tickets and provides an online gaming environment. The organization has undoubtedly done everything possible to succeed. The road to success for Paytm has not been without obstacles.

Paytm was launched by Vijay Shekhar Sharma in 2010 as a prepaid mobile recharge facility, and later in 2014, the Paytm wallet was launched. Aimed at a cashless and digital economy, Paytm tasted success during post demonetisation in 2016 when Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes were disbanded.

RALEGAN SIDDHI – A SUSTAINABLE VILLAGE MODEL FOR THE COUNTRY

RALEGAN SIDDHI – A SUSTAINABLE VILLAGE MODEL FOR THE COUNTRY

In times where ‘sustainability’ is a concept practised to stay on trend, Ralegan Siddhi is a village where they practise it as a lifestyle. This village is self-sufficient and has seen major growth in the last few decades. There is a familiar name behind the village’s evolution – Anna Hazare.

RALEGAN SIDDHI – A SUSTAINABLE VILLAGE MODEL FOR THE COUNTRY

RALEGAN SIDDHI A SUSTAINABLE VILLAGE MODEL FOR THE COUNTRY, a small village in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district, with a population of fewer than 2,500 people, is a model of environmental conservation. From being one of the poorest regions in the country to becoming one of the richest, this village has achieved the unthinkable.

RALEGAN SIDDHI – A SUSTAINABLE VILLAGE MODEL FOR THE COUNTRY

History of Ralegan Siddhi Story
Agriculture was the primary occupation in Ralegan Siddhi, but due to low rainfall and irrigation problems, the land wasn’t fertile enough to grow even basic crops. Because of such a situation, many people around the 1970s left Ralegan Siddhi to find local jobs elsewhere.

But their condition got worse as they didn’t find appropriate work for themselves and returned to their village empty-handed.

Unemployment and poverty arise, and consumption and production of alcohol became their new source of survival because they started producing alcohol as it needed less water and made them earn little money.

The arrival of Anna Hazare

In 1975, Baburao Anna Hazare (a retired army officer) returned to Ralegan Siddhi and was disappointed to witness such misery in his village. People were addicted to alcoholism, and Anna decided to serve the rest of his life in the village’s prosperity and its citizens.

He tried helping the villagers by employing them in seasonal jobs but soon realized that only agriculture could end poverty and make them self-sufficient and happy.

To make that happen, he was obliged to resolve this water crisis so that they can grow crops and earn their livelihood

The World Bank Group stated that Ralegan Siddhi evolved from a region of extreme poverty to one of the richest in the country.

Rich, not only in terms of economy but also in terms of sustainability. The Ralegan Siddhi Model/ Project was implemented around 25 years ago and is considered to be one of the most successful models of change in India. Ralegan Siddhi is a model village for sustainable economic development. Anna Hazare, a resident of this village, started this project with one goal: to work with the residents and bring them out of their poverty-stricken state and transform the village into a self-sufficient and sustainable one. Their efforts paid off and the village is an inspiration for the rest of the world.

The transformation of the village began in 1975 when Hazare decided to dedicate his life to developing Ralegan Siddhi. His main motivation was to improve the water conditions in the village as it fell under a drought zone. Agriculture was the primary occupation, but owing to meagre rainfall and poor irrigation methods, the village wasn’t fit for growing any crops. The main reason for Ralegan Siddhi being so poor is that the village is so severely deprived of rainfall, which led to unemployment, as no one was able to find jobs, neither in the agricultural field nor elsewhere outside the village.

In a desperate attempt, they turned to producing alcohol illegally. There was an increase in alcoholism, violence towards women and ill health. Hazare took this as a sign to begin implementing changes immediately. Fortunately, the villagers understood their own situation and voluntarily worked to bring themselves out of their plight.

Hazare’s motto was ‘sustainable development’. The village, under his guidance, began working on watershed development/ water management projects by building nalla bunds*,* dams, borewells, percolation tanks and other structures to store and maintain water levels year-round. They also began utilizing solar power, planted lakhs of trees, and initiated drip irrigation methods. He suggested certain farming practices to increase agricultural productivity. Now, Ralegan Siddhi is a picture of sustainability. The village is now self-reliant, able to grow and harvest food grains and other produce, with time to spare for community service.

The main things that the village had to improve were watershed development, rainwater harvesting and renewable energy. The people of the village dedicated countless hours to develop their surroundings, making Ralegan Siddhi one of the best examples of watershed management in the country.

Ralegan Siddhi is proof that, even when faced with dire circumstances, it is possible to come through and stand back up. A whole system was developed to bring the village out of poverty, demonstrating the sheer power of the mind. They took control of their own development and chose to follow sustainable practices to do their bit for the environment.
