Sam Bahadur is a biopic film based on the life of late Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, one of the most decorated army officers in India, with Vicky Kaushal in the titular role. Popular by the title of Sam Bahadur, Manekshaw had served the Indian army for over four decades and fought valiantly in a total of five wars- World War II (1942), Indo-Pak Partition War (1947), Sino-Indian War (1962), Indo-Pak War (1965), and the War of Bangladesh Liberation (1971). Known to have cheated death innumerable times during his tenure, he was awarded some of the most prestigious awards including Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and a Military Cross for gallantry (World War II). He was also the first army officer to be promoted to the rank of a Field Marshal in the Indian Army.

The makers of the highly-anticipated biopic Sam Bahadur, directed by Meghna Gulzar, has released its official trailer, sparking immense excitement among fans. The film delves into the life of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, played by Vicky Kaushal, who was the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. Manekshaw played a pivotal role in India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, leading to the creation of Bangladesh.

The trailer offers a sneak peek into Sam Manekshaw’s exceptional leadership and the formidable challenges he faced. The trailer showcases Manekshaw’s unwavering determination to win the war despite political pressure to maintain the status quo. The two-minute and thirty-eight-second trailer provides glimpses of Manekshaw’s illustrious 40-year military career, highlighting his relationship with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and how they worked together to defeat Pakistan. It also shows Manekshaw emphasising on the importance of discipline in the Army to a minister. The trailer concludes with Sam saying, ‘Hum rahe ya na rahi iss vardi ka gaurav hamesha rehna chahiye (Whether we live or die, the honor of this uniform must always endure).’”

Vicky Kaushal, in an earlier conversation with India Today, expressed his pride in the film Sam Bahadur. He said, “It’s another film that I am really, really proud of. It’s about a great man. Once again, I’m working with Meghna Gulzar. There are a lot of things in the film that I want to talk about, but at the right time. It’s something I am really looking forward to.”
Produced by Ronnie Screwvala under the RSVP Movies banner, Sam Bahadur is scheduled to hit theatres on December 1. The film will clash with Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, which is also set to release in theaters on the same day.

Development

In 2017 Meghna Gulzar narrated the story of the biopic on Sam Manekshaw on the sets of Raazi which she planned to make her next film. Kaushal impressed by the idea decided that he would play the character.[8] She then went for years of extensive research and writing collaborating with Bhavani Iyer and Shantanu Srivastava, also meeting with family members of Sam Manekshaw. The film marks the second collaboration between Gulzar and Kaushal. In 2021, the film was announced by RSVP Movies on the 107th birth anniversary of late Sam Manekshaw.

Casting
In December 2021, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra joined the cast. Neeraj Kabi joined the cast in September 2022 to portray the role of Jawaharlal Nehru marking his second collaboration with Gulzar after Talvar. Kaushal has gone through extensive training in the army under the guidance of the Indian Army’s 6 Sikh Regiment in preparing for his role.Kaushal in an interview with Film Companion revealed that the character would be his toughest onscreen role to date. The film will not have junior artists and instead real-life army personnel and people from the Defence Force have been cast.

Filming
The Principal photography began on 8 August 2022.The film was shot over two years in 13 locations in India covering four decades of the life of Sam Manekshaw.Filming took place in Mumbai, Pune, Jodhpur, Pataudi, Chandigarh, Ooty, Coonoor, Dehradun, Kolkata, Patiala, Srinagar, Pahalgam,and Delhi.The team wrapped on 14 March 2023.

Music

The music of the film is composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy while lyrics are written by Gulzar. Background score is composed by Ketan Sodha.The first single titled “Badhte Chalo” was released on 13 November 2023 The second single titled “Banda” will release on 22 November 2023.
